About the Course:
A criminal defence lawyer’s work for a client often ends once the court case is done. For clients sentenced to a term of imprisonment, however, the battle for freedom is not yet over. They may be facing months or years of navigating the correctional system – something that can be a minefield for the unprepared. In this webinar, two experienced prison lawyers, Eric Purtzki and Talia Magder, will discuss how criminal lawyers can help set their clients up for success in the correctional system and avoid missteps that could undermine their clients’ interests down the road.
About the Speakers:
Eric Purtzki, Fowler Blok Law
Eric Purtzki was called to the Bar of British Columbia in May of 2009. After graduating from law school from the University of New Brunswick, he articled at the Legal Services Society. Since then, Eric has been practicing in the areas of criminal and administrative law.
He has appeared before all levels of court including, the Supreme Court of Canada, British Columbia Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court of British Columbia, and the Provincial Court of British Columbia. Eric has also conducted trials and judicial reviews before the Federal Court of Canada and appeals to the Federal Court of Appeal. Eric also has extensive experience representing clients in administrative proceedings in prison and parole matters as well as in other administrative proceedings such as the investigations conducted under the Food and Drug Act. In addition to his private practice, Eric is also a case review lawyer at the appeals department of the Legal Services Society.
Throughout his career, Eric has volunteered providing legal advice through Access Pro Bono and representing clients through the Innocence Project at the University of British Columbia.
Talia Magder, TM Law
Talia Magder received her law degree from the UBC Peter A. Allard School of Law in 2014. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology from Simon Fraser University.
As a law student, Talia served as the Executive Director of the UBC Law Students' Legal Advice Program in 2013 (LSLAP). She was a case worker at the UBC Law Innocence Project which assists persons who claim they have been wrongfully convicted. As a lawyer, Talia now sits as a director of LSLAP. She also volunteers her time supervising students with the Innocence Project.
Talia has represented clients at all levels of court in British Columbia and accepts cases in criminal, regulatory, prison and family law. She was selected by the Legal Services Society to perform Duty Counsel services for both adults and youth in court, and acts as the Duty Counsel for the Williams Lake Indigenous Court.
