About the Course:
Technology can make victims and survivors of family violence extremely vulnerable. Stalking and surveillance, harassment and threats through electronic communications, hacking into the survivor’s email and social media accounts, and attacking the survivor online, are but a few of the myriad forms of tech-facilitated violence that may target both adults and children. This session will delve into this complex topic from both a legal and a technological perspective. Our technology expert will explain how perpetrators can use technology to abuse and what measures survivors can take to protect themselves, both proactively as well as in response to tech-facilitated violence. From a legal perspective, our speakers will review the state of the law and available legal responses. All lawyers and anyone involved in the family justice system will benefit from this in-depth presentation on the ever-evolving issues of tech-facilitated violence.   

About the Speakers: 
Dr. Moria Aikenhead, University of British Columbia 
Dr. Moira Aikenhead recently completed her PhD at the Peter A Allard School of Law at UBC, conducting a feminist legal analysis of the criminal justice response to technology-facilitated violence in intimate partnerships. Her research interests center broadly on the intersection of digital technologies and gender violence, and improving access to justice for victims of this violence. She has published numerous papers and presented extensively on these topics for academic, professional, and lay audiences. Since completing her PhD, Dr. Aikenhead has worked with Women’s Shelters Canada to produce an online Technology Facilitated Violence Toolkit, and is currently a Limited-Term Assistant Professor at the University of Victoria Faculty of Law. 

Elizabeth Cameron, Rise Women's Legal Centre
Elizabeth Cameron began their legal career practising in family law with a boutique firm in Vancouver. Currently, they act as the Virtual Legal Clinic Lawyer at Rise Women’s Legal Centre, where they work to increase access to justice for low-income people of marginalized genders who are navigating family law matters outside the BC Lower Mainland. Alongside colleagues, El has published and presented on a variety of family law topics, with emphasis on parenting and care of children, family violence and injunctive relief, evidence, and 2SLGBTQIA+ issues. 

Darren Laur, The White Hatter
Darren Laur has dedicated his life to public safety. He has over 30 years of law enforcement experience, as retired Staff Sergeant with the Victoria City Police Department. Darren holds 6 certifications in Open-Source Intelligence collection and online investigational techniques and is one of only a few civilian provincially licensed and certified advanced online open-source intelligence and social media investigators in BC. Darren is an internationally court recognized safety and violence prevention expert, speaker, and award-winning author specializing in personal safety and self-protection both online and offline.  He has presented internet and social media safety and digital literacy programs to over 500 schools and to students, teachers and parents across Canada and US. Along with his son Brandon, Darren co-hosts a weekly Internet safety and digital literacy YouTube Live broadcast.
