About the Course:
This webinar tackles the intersectionality of racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, urban-centrism and other prejudices with family violence. The panellists will address some specific issues related to family violence for Indigenous people, people of colour, immigrants, LGBTQ2S+ folks, and people living in rural and remote communities in order to assist lawyers and advocates in supporting clients from these communities.
About the Speakers:
Kelsey Borgfjord, Rise Women's Legal Centre, Williams Lake, BC
Kelsey Borgfjord resides in Williams Lake on Secwepemc territory. She has a diverse background, working in indigenous wellness programs, women’s counselling, and now family law. Kelsey previously worked as a family law advocate before joining Rise as the Legal Navigator in March 2022. Kelsey does intakes with clients throughout the province and connects them to various programs to help meet their needs.
Agnes Huang, Saltwater Law, Vancouver
Agnes Huang practises with Saltwater Law in family law and child protection law, as parent’s counsel. While based primarily in Vancouver, Agnes also has files on the Sunshine Coast, in the Okanagan, and in Prince Rupert/Terrace. Agnes regularly presents on family law issues, including at the provincial advocates conference hosted by the Law Foundation.
Summer Rain, Battered Women's Support Services, Vancouver
Summer Rain is the Manager of Direct Services, and Indigenous Womens programs, along with Indigenous Justice Center lead at Battered Womens Support Services. Summer has committed her work to the anti-violence movement for the last 20 years, with a particular focus on the child welfare system and ending MMIWG2+S.
Catherine Wong, Saltwater Law, Vancouver
Catherine Wong offers specialized family law legal services relating to marriage and cohabitation, guardianship and parenting, fertility law, separation and divorce, and property division and support. She is a certified family law mediator and a collaborative divorce practitioner. Catherine’s law practice has a particular focus on fertility law, working with the trans+ community, and working with polyamorous families. Catherine strongly believes in being an active member of her communities and has served on a number of boards and organizations including the City of Vancouver LGBTQ2S+ Advisory Committee, the Just Society Committee of EGALE, and Out on Screen which produces the Vancouver Queer Film Festival and operates Out in Schools.
