Presented by Professor Harriet MacMillan and Suzette Narbonne
9:00 - 11:30 am (2.5 CPD, Family Law ADR Family Violence & ADR Maintenance Credits)
About the Course:
Family violence is a legislated factor when considering parenting arrangements, but without in-depth knowledge of the impacts of family violence on children, lawyers and other legal professionals risk misreading the situation and compromising the safety of children and parents. This inter-disciplinary session will focus on psychological and legal issues that affect children. It will examine the short and long-term impacts on children of various forms of abuse, the relationship between family violence and parenting (by survivors and by perpetrators), and the diverse (and sometimes counter-intuitive) ways in which children may present. This session will also discuss how to introduce the evidence of children, addressing disclosures of family violence by a child, developing safe parenting plans (including addressing the children’s wishes), and obtaining services and counseling for children.
About the Speakers:
Professor Harriet MacMillan, McMaster University
Harriet MacMillan, CM, MD, is a psychiatrist and pediatrician conducting family violence research. She is a Distinguished University Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, and Pediatrics at McMaster University, and is an associate member in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact. She holds the Chedoke Health Chair in Child Psychiatry. Dr. MacMillan's research focuses on the epidemiology of violence against children and women; she has led randomized controlled trials evaluating the effectiveness of approaches to preventing child maltreatment and intimate partner violence.
Suzette Narbonne, Narbonne Law Office
Suzette Narbonne was called to the Manitoba bar in 1989 and began her career in The Pas with Legal Aid Manitoba. As counsel she travelled to isolated First Nations communities, conducting free legal advice clinics and litigating for her clients in criminal and family law cases– often in makeshift courts convened in band offices, recreation centres and hydro halls.
Since 1995, she has practiced law in BC. Suzette joined the Child and Youth Legal Centre at its inception in 2017, where she is managing lawyer. She has helped to shape the vision of child representation in BC. She has mentored many lawyers through the CBA, has served as a Governor for the Law Foundation of BC, as a Bencher of the Law Society of BC and as the Chair of the Legal Services Society.
