About the Course:
Screening for family violence is a legal obligation and one of the first crucial steps in working with a client, whether the client may be a survivor or a perpetrator of family violence. This session will guide you through screening tools: how to choose and use them, preventing misuse of screening tools, and understanding their limitations. It will delve into trauma-informed practice and into the challenges of asking clients sensitive questions and discussing sensitive issues. This session will then address what to do with the information you have gathered from screening, including “red flags,” safety planning, referrals to community organizations, and the need for ongoing screening for the entire duration of working on the case.
About the Speakers:
Nancy Cameron KC, Nancy Cameron Law Corporation
Nancy Cameron is a lawyer, writer, and educator. She is a family law practitioner whose practice is in the areas of collaborative law, mediation (Law Society Certified) and Hear the Child Reports (roster member since inception). She is particularly passionate about family justice systems change, is a board member of the Family Justice Innovation Lab, and works closely with A2JBC’s Transform the Family Justice System Collaborative. Patrick Grayer, Grayer Law Office
Patrick is a lawyer, mediator, and collaborative professional who practices law in the East Vancouver neighbourhood where he grew up and raised two children. While Patrick litigates, he believes alternative dispute resolution results in the healthiest and most enduring outcomes for families. Prior to law, Patrick worked directly with people with disabilities and at-risk youth, and still volunteers with a residential drug and alcohol program for youth. He regularly teaches legal drafting skills to law students and community based legal advocates, and volunteers as a mediator and collaborative professional through pro bono programs.

Haley Hrymak, Rise Women's Legal Centre
Haley Hrymak is a lawyer with Rise Women’s Legal Centre in Vancouver. Prior to working with Rise, Haley worked with the federal Crown in Winnipeg and in Vancouver. She holds a Master of Laws from the University of British Columbia, and her findings are published in the Dalhousie Law Journal and the Manitoba Criminal Law Journal. She is currently a PhD student at the University of British Columbia where she is conducting research on family violence and the family law system. Haley also has a consulting practice where she assists with designing and conducting thoughtful research that advances systemic change.
