Dr. Rachel Birnbaum, King's University College at Western University
Rachel Birnbaum, PhD, RSW, LLM, is a Professor at King’s University College at Western University in London, Ontario. She has received numerous research awards, has presented and published both nationally and internationally on parenting assessments, access to justice, child legal representation, children’s participation in family disputes, and on the intersection between law and social work.   

Kim Hawkins, Rise Women's Legal Centre
Kim Hawkins is the Executive Director of Rise Women’s Legal Centre. She came to Rise via Whitehorse, Yukon Territory where she worked for many years as a full time staff lawyer at a busy legal aid clinic, practising mainly in the areas of family and criminal law. While in Whitehorse she also spent two years as judicial clerk and served for four years as President of the Yukon Women’s Transition Home Society. From 2007 to 2008, Kim worked on strategic constitutional litigation at the Legal Resources Centre in Grahamstown, South Africa. She holds a JD in Law from the University of Victoria, and a Masters in International Human Rights Law from the University of Oxford.

Dr. Peter Jaffe, University of Western Ontario
Dr. Peter Jaffe is a psychologist, Professor Emeritus, and one of the founding Directors of the Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women & Children in the Faculty of Education at Western University (London Ontario, Canada). He has co-authored eleven books, 40 chapters and over 80 articles related to domestic violence, the impact of domestic violence on children, homicide prevention and the role of the criminal and family justice systems. For the past 30 years, he has presented workshops across the United States and Canada, as well as Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica and Europe to various groups including judges, lawyers, health, mental health professionals and educators. Since 1999, he has been on faculty for the National Council of Juvenile & Family Court Judges in the US for judicial education programs entitled “Enhancing Judicial Skills in Domestic Violence Cases”. He was a founding member of Ontario's Chief Coroner’s Domestic Violence Death Review Committee.

Zara Suleman, Suleman Family Law

Zara is the founder of Suleman Family Law where she practices family law and fertility law.  Zara is a certified family law mediator and collaborative law practitioner. She earned her LL.M. from the University of Victoria. Currently, Zara is a Board of Governor for the Law Foundation of BC and the Chair of the BC Law Institute Research Project on the Review of Legal Parentage under the Family Law Act. Zara was an Advisory member on the Department of Justice Family Violence Project which recently launched the HELP Toolkit on screening for family violence. She is on the Advisory for the FREDA Centre for Research on Violence Against Women and Children, SFU. Zara is one of the co-authors of Rise Women’s Legal Centre - “Are We Ready to Change? A Lawyer’s Guide to Keeping Women and Children Safe in BC’s Family Law System.”Zara has been working on issues of violence against women and children for over 30 years, and prior to law school was a front-line community advocate. Zara has also been actively involved in presenting, training, writing and editing materials on family law issues, trauma informed practice, and anti-racism/critical race theory issues. Zara was the 2018 Equality & Diversity Award Recipient from the Canadian Bar Association (BC).
