ABOUT THE COURSE:
The presenters of session 2 of the Criminal Jury Trials series, Brock Martland KC, Rebecca McConchie, and Matthew Nathanson will focus on how defence counsel shape the story in a jury trial, manage prejudicial evidence, and communicate effectively with jurors.
Topics include:
- Crafting a defence narrative that aligns with how jurors process information
- Handling damaging Crown evidence through voir dires, admissibility battles, and strategies for "unringing the bell"
- Building cross-examinations that humanize the accused and expose unreliability without alienating jurors
- Using courtroom dynamics: voice, pacing, sequencing of evidence, and demonstrative aids (including what is permitted in BC Supreme Court)
- Strategies when the accused testifies — preparation, structure, and risk mitigation
