ABOUT THE COURSE:
This webinar will provide a practical overview of jury selection within the constraints of Canadian law. Attendees will learn strategies for identifying and addressing potential bias, making effective use of limited juror information and questioning, and advancing challenges for cause. The session also highlights issues that arise when representing Indigenous, racialized, or otherwise marginalized accused, and offers guidance on preserving the record when concerns arise during jury selection.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Glen Orris KC earned his law degree from the University of Manitoba and was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1973. Glen is one of Canada’s most respected criminal defence lawyers with over five decades of experience in criminal law. Glen has represented clients in some of Canada’s most high-profile and complex cases, and has appeared at every level of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the legal profession, he was appointed King’s Counsel in 1988. A long-standing leader in the legal community, Glen is a past President of the Vancouver Bar Association, a former executive member of the Canadian Bar Association, and a dedicated legal educator. He has taught advocacy for the Continuing Legal Education Society and served as a discussion leader for the Inns of Court Project, a mentorship program founded by a former Chief Justice of British Columbia.
Ian Donaldson KC was called to the Bar in 1985. He practices primarily criminal law and ancillary civil litigation. He became Queen’s Counsel in 1998, and is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He was honoured with the ‘Lawyers helping Lawyers’ award from LAP. He was a Bencher from 1999 to 2007 and is now a ‘Lifer’. He served on many Law Society committees. He has served the CBA in many capacities, including the Burns Committee on Reform of the Criminal Law; Task Force on the Reform of the Criminal Code; Chair, BC representative, National Executive; He wrote a regular column in the Verdict for over 10 years and served on the TLABC Executive. Ian has been active in other professional organizations and committees, including the Joint Justice Planning Committee; the Street Crime Working Group; Canadian Council of Criminal Defence Lawyers; CDAS, and lecturer at CLE, PLTC, Crown Counsel seminars and UBC Allarsd School of Law. Ian was vice president and BC representative on the Federation of Law Societies of Canada, the national coordinating body of Canada’s 14 law societies.
