About the Presentation:
Power and culture are essential parts of conflict and conflict resolution. Inequalities of power may arise from individual or structural imbalances, personality, and wealth. This can interfere with understanding each others’ perspectives and being able to freely express viewpoints. Cultures are like underground rivers that run through our lives and relationships, giving us messages that shape our perceptions, attributions, judgments, and ideas of self and other. It’s important for lawyers and their clients to prepare for aspects of power and culture in dispute resolution, and speakers Dan George, Kathryn Deo, and Dr. Andrew Pilliar bring perspectives from working with individuals, first nations, government, and academia. Come prepared for the live Q&A session.

About the Speakers:
Kathryn Deo, Arbutus Law Group LLP
Kathryn Deo holds an LL.M. in Dispute Resolution from Osgoode Hall. She is a legal member of the Tsawwassen First Nation Judicial Council. Her law practice focuses on self-governance initiatives, including negotiation of self-governance agreements and the drafting of Constitutions, Land Codes, land laws, and other laws, bylaws, and related policies. Kathryn is called to the bar in British Columbia, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. She is recognized in the Lexpert Legal Directory and in Best Lawyers in Canada as a leading practitioner in Aboriginal law.

Dan George, Four Directions Management Services 
Dan George is a tireless advocate for reconciling the competing values and viewpoints of Aboriginal people, Industry and the Crown, and for over 30 years, has centred his efforts on the need to strengthen these valuable and transformational relationships. He holds an MA in Conflict Analysis and Management and certification as a Professional Facilitator.

Dr. Andrew Pilliar, Thompson Rivers University Faculty of Law
Dr. Andrew Pilliar is an Assistant Professor at TRU Law. His interest in access to justice extends both to how people find and obtain legal services, and also how legal service providers can deliver services in more accessible ways. His articles have appeared in the Windsor Yearbook of Access to Justice and the Journal of Law and Equality, and his TEDx talk on access to justice has been viewed several thousand times online.
