About the Course:
Gender-inclusive legal writing demonstrates a high level of professionalism and commitment to justice.
This presentation will explore the concepts in the BC Law Institute’s recent release, Gender Diversity in Legal Writing: Pronouns, Honorifics, and Gender-Inclusive Techniques.
Presenter Alison Wilkinson, staff lawyer with the BC Law Institute & Canadian Centre for Elder Law will help attendees:
- Answer questions like: “What do I do if I’ve misgendered someone?” or “How do I use ‘they’ as a singular pronoun?”
- Implement simple tools to write in a gender inclusive manner;
- Understand key terms and avoid common misconceptions.
Participants will have the opportunity to apply the material and hone their skills, and will be provided concrete examples to use immediately in their law practice.
About the Speaker:
Alison Wilkinson, British Columbia Law Institute & Canadian Centre for Elder Law
Born and raised in Kamloops, she obtained her BA in Psychology from UVic and JD from UBC. She articled in Calgary, and was called to the Alberta Bar in 2013 and the BC Bar in 2014.
After returning to BC, Alison worked as in-house counsel with a small business, and obtained training in arbitration, mediation and coaching. She was a sessional instructor on dispute resolution for the Faculty of Business at Thompson Rivers University. Prior to joining BCLI, she worked as a family law lawyer with a firm in Kamloops.
