ACLEA - Outstanding Achievement in Best Program

The International Association for Continuing Legal Education (ACLEA) has awarded TLABC one of only 21 annual awards granted to competitors representing more than 300 organizations.

An Award for OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT was given to TLABC for our Medical Legal Conference XIII: Hawaii 2015 - Health and Legal Professionals Working Together as Allies in the Best Program category.

ACLEA members are professionals in the fields of continuing legal education and legal publishing. Its annual ACLEA’s Best Awards are highly competitive and winning projects represent the highest level of achievement for the staff and volunteers involved.

Program Description:
Every year TLABC has a medical-legal conference that brings lawyers and medical professionals together. For our conference in Hawaii, January 2015, we took on the huge task of a recorded mock trial with a focus group “jury”, on the subject of medical marijuana.

We were granted allowance to have the mock trial at the BC Supreme Courthouse a few months before the conference. The trial was presided over by our keynote speaker, The Hon Mr Justice Nathan Smith, and included the Plaintiff and Defence Counsel, our medical expert (who is the leading medical expert in BC on medical marijuana), and a focus group “jury” of 7. The mock trial included the direct and cross examination of “Dr Goodman” regarding his client who suffered from chronic pain and his recommendations for treatment using marijuana tea.

The mock trial was recorded, as was the 2-hour focus group session following the trial with our "jury". Robyn Wishart, a local lawyer and focus group expert, ran the “deliberation” and later presented the video footage at the conference in Hawaii, flipping between clips of the examination, and the jury’s reactions to the doctor’s recommendations and qualifications. To accompany her video footage presentation, we had in attendance on a panel, the sitting judge (Mr Justice Smith), Plaintiff Counsel (Marc Kazimirski), and court reporter Christy Pratt (who submitted a full transcript of the mock trial). Defence Counsel (Joe Cahan) and our medical expert (Dr. Gwyllyn Goddard) were not able to make the conference unfortunately.

With the footage, the audience was able to see how the jury reacted to the information in the trial, vs the judge. A topic like medical marijuana was the perfect subject for this exercise, as it showed the vast difference between how this case would be viewed by a jury trial or judge alone.

This conference was approved for both legal credits in BC, as well as medical credits (Family Doctors, Specialists, and Psychiatrists)
