Presented by Cynthia Morin (Occupational Therapist)

A spinal cord injury (SCI) is catastrophic; significantly impacting an individual’s functioning.  The injured person’s personal care requirements, rehabilitation and equipment needs vary depending on the type and level of injury.  In addition, secondary health issues associated with SCIs can greatly influence their equipment and service needs years after the initial injury.

A Cost Of Future Care Assessment on an individual with a SCI should be approached as a dynamic health issue and include recommendations for both the individual’s initial post injury needs, as well as their potential future care and equipment needs.

The goals of this presentation are:

  • To review types of spinal cord injuries and the AIS classification system
  • Provide an overview of equipment and care needs initially following the injury
  • Discuss concepts in spinal cord injury rehabilitation and equipment.
  • And provide information on secondary health issues associated with SCIs, and how these health issues can impact an individual’s care and equipment needs.
