More and more the criminal law practitioner is required to provide advice about the effect of a criminal charge on all aspects of an accused person’s life. The ancillary consequences associated with various offences requires the criminal lawyer to stay current with the ever changing sentencing regimes as well as the applicability of any relevant provincial statute. Mandatory minimum penalties abound. Some accused person’s risk losing their home to the state. Others will suffer the consequences of a lingering criminal record that will interfere with their life long after the sentence was served or the stay of proceedings was entered.
