Members of our association met recently with Mr. Geoffrey Cowper QC as part of the review process initiated by the BC Government. Members of our executive committee met with Mr. Cowper on April 20, and members of our Legal Aid Action Committee met with him on April 19.
The review process got underway in early February, after the government appointed Mr. Cowper to conduct a review of BC’s criminal justice system. At a meeting of the TLABC Executive, held on February 22, a motion passed that paved the way for TLABC to formally take part in the process.
The BC Government released a green paper to coincide with the launch of the review. The paper outlines some of the government’s current concerns, with an eye toward reform. The terms of reference call for Mr. Cowper to deliver his report by July 2012. Mr. Cowper has advised that he will make his report public. It is anticipated that Mr. Cowper’s report will be followed by a government white paper, which will recommend specific reforms.
Here is the website that was established for the review process:

Everyone thinks they know about the case where a woman spilled hot coffee on herself and sued for millions. What they don't know is that big business distorted the truth about the case in an effort to discredit the power of the average citizen in our civil justice system.
Now, for the first time in Vancouver, the public will have a chance to learn the whole truth.
